Census Canada reveals that Calgary had the highest growth rate of any metropolitan area in Canada over the past five years, despite being in the throes of an economic downturn.

It is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country, according to 2016 census data released Wednesday by Statistics Canada.

The agency says the first batch of numbers from the census shows Calgary increased by 14.6 per cent since the last census in 2011, far surpassing the national growth rate of 5.0 per cent.
