Canadians to be able to choose ‘X’ as gender on their passports soon.




Ahmed Hussen, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Ahmed Hussen announced on Thursday that by August 31st, Canadians will be able to identify themselves as neither male nor female on their passport.

He said in a statement, “By introducing an ‘X’ gender designation in our government-issued documents, we are taking an important step towards advancing equality for all Canadians regardless of gender identity or expression.”

A sex field is mandatory for travel documents under International Civil Aviation Organization rules. ICAO allows one of three markers: F for female, M for male or X for “unspecified.”
