Cobourg, a town near Toronto witnessed a shooting in Northumberland Hills Hospital that left 2 people dead.
Northumberland Hills Hospital confirmed in a statement that there was a “serious incident” in its emergency department that involved a weapon.
The Ontario Provincial Police says a man and a woman are dead after a shooting inside an emergency room of a hospital in Cobourg, Ont.
The SIU (Special Investigations Unit) is now on the scene at the Hospital and has taken over the investigation.
SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro said that Cobourg Police were initially called to the hospital’s emergency room for the sound of gunshots at about 11 p.m. on last night.
Gennaro added that when police arrived, they encountered a man. Two officers then fired their weapons.
A man, 70, was struck by bullets and was pronounced dead at the scene.Officers then found a woman, 76, who was dead.
The death of the woman is being investigated.
The statement released by the hospital states that the scene has been secured, there is no danger to the public, and patients, caregivers and staff members at the hospital are safe. Care in all other areas of the hospital is continuing as normal, it said.
In the statement, Linda Davis, hospital president and CEO, said staff and physicians at the hospital are trained to deal with situations involving weapons.
She said, “While we hope that we never need to use this training, it proved very beneficial tonight.”
