Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders says its officers will not participate in this year’s Pride Parade.

The chief said in a statement that he understands the LGBTQ communities are divided following a vote by Pride Toronto members last month to remove police floats and marches from their annual parade.

The chief said, “To enable those differences to be addressed, I have decided the Toronto Police Service will not participate, this year, in the Pride Parade."

The police will continue to hold its annual Pride reception.

The chief also added, “I want to make it very clear that this will have no impact on our ongoing outreach to LGBTQ communities.”
