Punjab Zila Parishad, Panchayat Samiti Election Results

The ruling Congress has swept the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls in Punjab, according to the results declared by the state election commission on Sunday.

Counting of votes for the local polls took place on Saturday after the state went to vote on September 19. A total of 354 Zila Parishad and 2,900 panchayat Samiti members were to be elected through these polls. There are 22 Zila Parishads and 150 Panchayat Samitis in the state.

33 candidates were earlier elected unopposed to various Zila Parishads and 369 nominees were elected unopposed to the Panchayat Samitis.

Here is the final tally of seats won by each parties:

Zila (district) Parishad polls:

The Congress won 331 of the 335 Zila Parishad seats, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) got 18, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured two and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) none, the State Election Commission said.

Panchayat Samiti polls:

Out of 2,899 zones of 150 Panchayat Samitis, 2,351 candidates of the Congress have won, 353 of SAD, 63 of BJP, 20 of AAP, one of CPI, two of SAD (Amritsar), two of CPI (M) and 107 of others, it said in a statement here.
