911 is supposed to be an emergency contact number but several miscreants are not using it properly. Peel officials said that there were too many accidental and non-emergency calls to 911 in Mississauga and Brampton

Too many accidental and non-emergency calls to 911 in Mississauga and Brampton were wasting the valuable time of the police, firefighters, and paramedics said the Region of Peel officials and police.

As per the report, nearly 40 percent of calls made to, 911 last year, were not due to an emergency.

“This means that valuable time and resources were lost due to accidental calls and non-emergencies,” Region of Peel officials said in a news release. The Peel officials also announced April 10-16 as 911 Awareness Week.

In an order to make sure that 911 services were used for emergencies only, the Region issued reminders for the residents to avoid non-emergency calls to 911.

It asked the citizens to only call 911 when someone needs immediate help from paramedics, police, or fire or call 311, 211, or non-emergency phone numbers for access to non-emergency help.

It further reminded residents of dialing 011 codes before calling internationally, and locking their cell phones, and not programing 911 into their phones.
