A helicopter used to fight wildfires crashes near Evansburg, Alberta.
Emergency crews were called to a helicopter crash Monday night near Evansburg, Alta., west of Edmonton. According to RCMP, there was just one person on board the helicopter, and the status of that person is unknown at this time. A 175-hectare wildfire has been raging in the area since last week and is presently classed as being contained, which is why the helicopter was present.
"The aircraft that crashed is a helicopter that was participating in firefighting efforts in that region," RCMP Corp. Candace Hrdlicka said.
Justin Laurence, press secretary to Agriculture and Forestry Minister Devin Dreeshen, confirmed the crash of a contract helicopter fighting a wildfire near Evansburg, roughly 100 kilometers west of Edmonton, in a statement Monday night. According to a news release, the Evansburg RCMP received a 911 call just after 6:30 p.m. Monday reporting an aircraft crash in a remote region near Evansburg.
The Evansburg RCMP, EMS, firefighters, and Alberta Wildfire all rushed to the scene, which is located in Yellowhead County west of Highway 22 and north of Highway 16. The place is not reachable by car. According to Hrdlicka, authorities were able to gain access to the site via plane. Laurence stated that an inquiry into the crash's causes is ongoing.
