Jon Rahm wins the US Open with two birdies for his first career major.

Jon Rahm's two career-changing putts earned him two trophies on Sunday. On Father's Day, he walked off the 18th green at Torrey Pines with his 3-month-old baby, Kepa. Then he grabbed the silver U.S. Open trophy after a passionate performance devoid of blunders that wiped out everyone else. Rahm caught Louis Oosthuizen with a twisting 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole. On the 18th hole, he sunk another curving, left-to-right birdie putt from 18 feet for a 4-under 67 and a one-shot victory.

Rahm, 26, became the first Spaniard to win the U.S. Open, finally bringing a major reward to his immense talent. His triumph also re-established him as the world's number one. Oosthuizen was the last to fall on a back nine littered with double bogeys by so many contenders and a startling meltdown by reigning champion Bryson DeChambeau.

With a one-shot lead, Oosthuizen drove into the canyon left of the 17th fairway for a bogey, putting him two shots back, and then he missed the fairway on the par-5 18th, preventing him from driving for the green for a chance at the eagle and forcing a playoff. He made do with a birdie and a 71. It was his second major runner-up finish in a row and his sixth silver medal since winning the British Open at St. Andrews in 2010.

Rahm was on the verge of another major win just two weeks ago. After 54 holes, he held a six-shot lead at the Memorial, only to be informed as he walked off the 18th green at Muirfield Village that he had a positive COVID-19 test and would have to withdraw.

Worse, his parents had traveled in from Spain to meet their new grandson, and Rahm was in self-isolation and couldn't be present for such a wonderful occasion. Sunday more than made up for it. His parents had traveled to Torrey Pines to see a world-class performance topped by one of the greatest finishes in US Open history.
