The City of Brampton is reviewing the location of two Brampton Transit bus stops on a stretch of Queen Street West where one pedestrian was killed, another critically injured in separate collisions Monday, Nov. 20.

Meanwhile, the Region of Peel, which is managing the road construction project on that section of Queen, is urging residents not to walk in the area between Mississauga Road and Elbern Markell Drive until sidewalks are installed.

Jeffrey Knowles, 30, was killed at 9:30 p.m. on Queen near Elbern Markell Drive, in a construction zone that has Queen Street undergoing a major transformation between Mississauga Road and Chinguacousy Road.

At 6:30 a.m. that same day, a 61-year-old female pedestrian was also hit in the same area on Queen. It isn’t clear if she was a transit user, just out for a walk, or had another destination.

However, residents have complained that the area isn’t safe for pedestrians, because of a lack of sidewalks, and that the location of at least one of the bus stops forces transit users to walk on the road to reach it.

Once complete in November 2018, Queen Street will have a full sidewalk on the south side and a multi-use trail on the north side, both stretching from Mississauga Road to Chinguacousy Road, according to Gary Kocialek, the Region of Peel’s transportation division director.

“Unfortunately the section to the west of Elbern Markell will continue to be constricted for the next few months and we would urge pedestrians not to walk in this area,” Kocialek said in an email.

He added,“We continue to remind all road users to take additional care while this area is under construction."
