Canada won’t ‘play partisan politics’ with NAFTA: Trudeau

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada-U.S. trade relations and the government’s efforts on NAFTA re-negotiations go “beyond partisanship.”

Trudeau says he will continue to work with Canadians to get “the right deal” for the country.

“The issue of trade with the United States and our relationship with the United State is far too important to play partisan politics with. I am pleased at the strong and concerted effort that our government and all Canadians have played in working hard to negotiate a better deal, the right deal with NAFTA,” he said.

Trudeau stressed that he would continue to draw on people of all regions and political stripes.

“I am very pleased that amongst the efforts that we had that go beyond partisanship I can highlight the effort of prominent Conservatives like former Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney who has been extraordinarily helpful in making sure that Canada’s interest is in the centre of this,” he added.

He also conveyed that he will be working in tandem with people right across the country to demonstrate that Canada is strong and united and focused.

“On getting the right deal for Canada as we move forward in re-negotiating the NAFTA and I won’t be playing politics with it,” said Trudeau.
