Canadian officials met US Homeland Security chief.

US Homeland Security Chief John Kelly travelled to Ottawa on Friday to meet with Canadian Cabinet counterparts. Kelly is the first of President Donald Trump's cabinet to visit Ottawa.

An increasing number of asylum seekers have been making the dangerous winter journey to Canada, crossing the border illegally in the provinces of Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia.

The issue of asylum seekers crossing the Canada-US border illegally topped the agenda of the meeting.

Federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale stated that two nations need more information on the nature and the causes of the migration before they can develop an appropriate and humane response.
