Finance Minister Bill Morneau received an earful on the Liberals’ proposed tax changes and was often drowned out by a largely critical crowd during a town hall meeting in Oakville,ON today morning.
Today was the last town hall event before the consultation period over the tax reforms ends Monday. The event got off to a rocky start when Morneau was cut off during his opening remarks.
Once the questions round started, the majority were critical of the three pillars of the proposed changes:
Restricting the ability of business owners to reduce their tax rate by sprinkling their income to family members.
Putting limits on the use of private corporations to make passive investments that are unrelated to the company.
Limiting business owners’ ability to convert regular income of a corporation into capital gains.
Many who stood in line at the microphones identified as doctors and business owner.
