As Mississauga firefighters battled a major house fire on Morningstar Drive in Malton Monday afternoon, a gas leak and the presence of two industrial-sized propane tanks caused major concern
Just after 3 p.m., nearby houses were evacuated as firefighters tried to douse the flames, which were shooting up so high as it appeared two homes may have been on fire.
According to Mississauga fire Platoon Chief Daniel Ennamorato, only one house was burning, the other flame seemed to be from the other side of the house as there was a gas leak around the gas meter,
“It was going pretty well when we got here,” the Chief he said. “We’re going into the house, doing primary and secondary searches.”
When firefighters first arrived, the flames were highly intense. People were home at the time of the fire, but they escaped unhurt. The occupants escaped quickly.
“The neighbour across the street saw the flames shooting up from the back and he went over and knocked on their front door,” Ennamorato said.
“Two firefighters were also being monitored by Peel Region Paramedics after becoming lightheaded from the heat,” he added.
The fire appears to have started in the back yard and spread to the roof of the house. So far, the cause is unknown, but a Mississauga fire investigator will attend the scene to examine it for indications of a cause.
As thick black smoke was seen billowing from the house, the street was closed and emergency officials warned residents to avoid the area.
