HIV advocates share the big news that Ontario will soon cover a combination HIV prevention pill that is now available in generic form. The once-daily pill contains two anti-HIV drugs that reduce the risk of sexual transmission in HIV-negative individuals.
The drug called Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP was first introduced to treat HIV.It originally cost about $1,000 a month as the brand name Truvada.
People in Ontario could seek the drug from community health clinics, family medicine clinics and sexual health clinics, not just HIV physicians.
Ontario’s Health Ministry added the PrEP drug to its formulary of publicly covered drugs on Thursday, effective Sept. 28
