In an important event, India may already have surpassed China in terms of the world's population. The World Population Review (WPR) estimates that India will have 141.7 crore people by the end of 2022. This is just more than 50 lakh higher than the 141.2 crore stated by China on January 17, when there was the first dip since the 1960s, according to official announcements.

According to government data, the following are some important demographic facts about India:

  • China has 1.4 billion people, whereas India estimates to have 1.38 billion.
  • Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in the country, with a projected population of 230 million people, while Lakshadweep is the least populous, with only 68,000 people.
  • India is one of the world's youngest nations, with 27.3% of its population falling under the 15-to-29 age range.publive-image
  • India is one of the eight countries estimated to account for more than half of the projected growth in world population from now to 2050.
  • Annual population growth in the South Asian nation has averaged 1.2% since 2011, down from 1.7% in the preceding ten years.
  • From 53.5% in 2015–16, India's usage of family planning methods climbed to 66.67% in 2019–21.
  • From 3.4 in 1992–1993, India's total fertility rate—the number of children per woman—dropped to 2 in 2019–2021.

WPR estimates that as of January 18, there were 142.3 crore people living in India. India's population is still expected to expand until at least 2050, according to WPR, despite a recent slowdown.

Along with the population data, China also reported one of its worst economic growth figures in in 50 years, highlighting the significant difficulties the nation confronts as its labour force decreases and the ranks of the retired rise.

The "demographic dividend," as economists and others refer to it, might sustain India's continued strong growth as the proportion of healthy employees rises.
