Due to misinformation that implies the animal dewormer can be used to treat COVID-19 in people, Alberta feed retailers are receiving a flood of calls seeking to acquire ivermectin. False claims concerning animal medication have attracted the worst kind of attention, according to Lance Olson, manager of Lone Star Tack & Feed Inc., located just outside of Calgary.
“It’s clear that it’s not designed for human usage in any way. It’s supposed to get rid of worms in horses’ intestines… So, these people see the ivermectin liquid, search for it, find our website, and phone us believing we can just sell it to them “According to Olson.
“If you have no idea what it is, you probably don’t have any animals to use it on… When people call, it makes me very uneasy because of the circumstances around this… As a result, we’ve removed it off the shelf.”
Ivermectin comes in a variety of forms that are used to treat parasites in both animals and people, such as intestinal worms and lice. However, the drug’s cattle version should never be used on people, since parasites are not the same as viruses. COVID-19 is an infection caused by a virus.
