Beyond the confines of India, the jubilant spirit of Holi finds resonance in various foreign lands, where communities join in the celebration with equal fervor.
In the neighboring nation of India, Myanmar, the festival of colors assumes the names "Meikang" and "Thingyan," and is met with immense enthusiasm. Coinciding with the New Year festivities, this event witnesses people joyfully dousing each other with vibrant hues and splashes of water, symbolizing the dawn of a new beginning.
Nepal echoes the colorful celebrations of its neighboring counterpart, India, during the festival of Holi. Here, traditions closely mirror those of India, with participants engaging in water balloon fights and exchanging playful splashes of color. Large vessels of water stand as invitations for individuals to immerse themselves fully in the jubilant hues of the occasion.
Italy Joins In
Surprisingly, Italy also partakes in a festival reminiscent of Holi, known as the "Orange Battle," celebrated in January. Unlike the conventional use of colored powders, this event sees participants engaging in a playful exchange of tomatoes. Similarly, in Spain, revelers indulge in tossing tomatoes and their juice at each other in a jovial display of camaraderie.
Holika Dahan in Mauritius
In Mauritius, the ritual of Holika Dahan holds profound significance as a festival intertwined with agriculture and farming. Spanning approximately 40 days, commencing from Vasant Panchami, this festival signifies a time of reverence and festivity, honoring traditions passed down through generations.
Sri Lanka
Much like its Indian counterpart, Sri Lanka embraces the vibrant spirit of Holi. Festivities here include the playful application of red, green, yellow, and gulal colors, accompanied by spirited water fights using water guns, all in commemoration of this joyous occasion.
