Ontarios’s Auditor general to release report on 25% hydro bill cuts

Premier Kathleen Wynne’s move to reduce hydro bills in Ontario with an election looming goes under the auditor general’s microscope toda

Ontario’s auditor general, Bonnie Lysyk is set to report today on the Liberal government’s 25 per cent cuts to hydro bills, which came after increasing anger over rising prices.

The hydro plan lowers time-of-use rates by removing from bills a portion of the global adjustment, a charge consumers pay for above-market rates to power producers, and for the next 10 years, a new entity overseen by Ontario Power Generation will take on debt to pay that difference.

The auditor general will reveal the results of her investigation Tuesday into how the rate cuts are financed, and whether the plan is fair for taxpayers and hydro customers.
