Starbucks made a fresh stride in the post-pandemic recovery this week when it announced that it will once again serve customers coffee in their reusable mugs. Meanwhile, because of the COVID-19 outbreak, big competitors Tim Hortons and McDonald's say they have no imminent plans to accept reusable mugs.

Because of health concerns, several quick-service businesses, including prominent franchises Starbucks, McDonald's, and Tim Hortons, refused to accept reusable mugs when the pandemic first struck in March 2020. Customers had no choice but to obtain their coffee in a disposable cup when ordering a takeaway.

Some ecologically conscious coffee drinkers are wondering why the other major businesses haven't followed Starbucks' lead and reintroduced reusable mugs. "During COVID-19, a lot of environmental issues were put on the back burner," remarked Brenya Green of Toronto, who is looking forward to being served coffee in her reusable mug once more.

Customers remove the lid from the reusable cup and place it on a tray or in a Starbucks-provided ceramic mug. A Starbucks staff only touches the ceramic mug or tray when filling the cup.

"We wanted to create a new normal," said Luisa Girotto, Starbucks Canada's vice-president of public affairs. "This has been redesigned from a really conservative, cautious safety viewpoint."
