Actor Shah Rukh Khan inaugurated the 28th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival with Amitabh Bachchan on Thursday. While addressing the audience, Shah Rukh Khan also talked about the impacts of social media and the negativity that spreads in society through social media platforms.
Without specifically mentioning the responses to Pathaan on social media, SRK said that, “Cinema and advent of articulation through social media platforms have now become the foremost expression of human emotions and experience. The collective narrative of our times is shaped by social media and contrary to the belief that the spread of social media will affect the cinema negatively.
Boycott Pathaan has been a trendy hashtag on Twitter ever since Pathaan's song "Besharam Rang" was released. Social media users are criticizing SRK and Deepika Padukone's green and saffron attire in the song. Some are even urging for a boycott of Shah Rukh's upcoming film while digging out old videos of him.
During the event, the Pathaan actor added, "Social media is oftentimes powered by a particular narrowness of perspective that reduces human nature to its most primitive self... I read that negativity encourages use of social media... These activities enclose the collective narrative, which makes it divisive & destructive."
Pathaan is directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Yash Raj Films. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. The movie is slated to release on January 25 in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
