Sharing is not Always Caring

Region of Peel –On November 23, 2019, Peel Regional Police responded to an assault that was taking place between a man and a woman, in front of a residence in the City of Brampton. Officers arrived, located the man, and placed him under arrest for assault contrary to the Criminal Code. The 37-year-old man from Brampton appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on November 24, 2019 in answer to the charge.

On November 24, 2019, video of the incident began to circulate on social media and was subsequently provided to Peel Regional Police by several members of the community. The video will be used as evidence in the ongoing court matter.

“Video surveillance and social media are powerful tools that allow for the sharing of information and assist in investigations. However, sharing sensitive and graphic content can cause more harm to the victim and jeopardize court proceedings” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah.

We understand that the acts displayed in the video has raised the ire of the community, but to maintain the integrity of court proceedings and to protect the victim from being re-victimized, Peel Regional Police are asking the public to not share the video and to remove any posts they may have already shared.

Anyone with information pertaining to this matter is asked to contact the 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at (905) 453-3311, ext. 2233. Information may also be left anonymously by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477) or by visiting peelcrimestoppers.ca.
