New York Police has introduced new rules allowing Sikh police officers to wear turbans instead of traditional police hats.
The turbans must be navy blue and have the NYPD insignia attached, said the Police department.
The new rules also state that religious members of the force are also permitted to grow beards up to half-an-inch long.
Police Commissioner, James O’Neill said during a news conference,”If I’ve got my numbers right, we have about 160 people from the Sikh community, and hopefully with this change of policy, we’ll be able to get more people to apply.”
The Sikh Officers Association of the US thanked Mr O’Neill adding that it was a “proud moment” for the Sikh community.
