The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement after learning yesterday of the fatal CF-18 Hornet air training accident at 4 Wing Cold Lake in Alberta:

“I was profoundly saddened to learn yesterday of the tragic accident that took the life of Captain Thomas McQueen of the Royal Canadian Air Force as he was training at the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Captain McQueen.

“This accident is another painful reminder of the dangers that members of the Canadian Armed Forces face every day to ensure the safety and security of our citizens. Their courage, their bravery, and the sacrifices they make represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian. I would also like to thank all first responders for their efforts on that tragic day.

“A proud member of 401 Tactical Fighter Squadron, Captain McQueen lost his life in the line of duty. His sacrifice will be honoured and remembered by all Canadians.”
