Suspended BJP leader Seema Patra arrested for torturing her maid

A suspended BJP leader Seema Patra accused of torturing her maid at her home in Jharkhand, hit her with iron rod and starving her, was arrested this morning after her son revealed the horrific abuse to his friend and asked for help.

"She has been taken into custody. Other formalities are being completed," said Ranchi senior superintendent of police Kishor Kaushal

Seema Patra was caught after her son shared the matter of abuse with his friend, a government officer and asked for help.

The victim, Sunita Kumar (29) had been working for her for the past 10 years. In one of the viral videos she claimed she was often beaten with an iron rod, hot pans, and was even compelled to lick the floor's urine. Her teeth are broken and this bruises all over her body points to repeated attacks according to the report.

According to sources, the Ranchi Police had rescued the woman from Ms. Patra's home last week after receiving a tip from a government worker, and on August 30 had taken the domestic help's statement in front of a magistrate.

Ms Patra was a member of the national working committee of the BJP's women wing and her husband, Maheshwar Patra, is a retired IAS officer.

Patra is also the state convenor of the Centre government’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, according to her Facebook profile.
