In a major development, the teen driver who was involved in the Vaughan crash, in which two children — a brother and sister — were killed, has been sent to an open custody youth facility on Monday.

The driver was 16-year-old at the time of the incident. Reportedly, his name cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. According to information, the teen driver has been sentenced to six months of supervision in the community besides the one-year sentence in the open custody youth facility.

In addition to this, the teen has been handed over a ban on driving for six years. The incident took place on December 1, 2021, when the driver lost control of his father’s Mercedes. He was reportedly travelling at a speed of over 100 km/h on Athabasca Drive in Vaughan.

Soon after he lost control of the vehicle, the car rammed into the two siblings and a neighbour who was fixing a bike. The neighbour, fortunately, sustained just minor injuries while the siblings were taken to hospital in critical condition.

Unfortunately, the brother died on the same day while his sister was pronounced dead a day later. They were identified as four-year-old boy Jax Chaudhari and 10-year-old Anaya.

The driver is now 17-year-old. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death. Meanwhile, the siblings’ parents, identified as Ketan and Binta Chaudhari, on Monday expressed grief while addressing the media persons.

Ketan said that he has to accept that they were completely helpless and vulnerable to the recklessness of a stranger and that he has to accept the laws that protect the guilty. He further said that he will have to carry the guilt and the regret for the rest of his life.

Criminal defence lawyer Ari Goldkind said that Open custody actually means open.
