On the final night of the Canadian Screen Awards on Thursday, a zombie horror film set on a First Nations reservation took home the most trophies, while the top prize went to a coming-of-age film inspired by the Oka Crisis.

Tracey Deer's Oka-inspired Beans received both the John Dunning award for best first feature film and the Oscar for best motion picture, marking a triumphant return for the director, who won the Toronto International Film Festival's emerging talent award just a year ago.

Meanwhile, Jeff Barnaby's horror Blood Quantum earned six of its ten nominations, including best visual effects, costume design, and lead actor performance for Michael Greyeyes.

Akilla's Escape, on the other hand, came in second place with five nominations, including best original screenplay and cinematography.

Michelle Pfeiffer won best leading actress for her role in French Exit, which was adapted from Patrick deWitt's novel and for which he also wrote the screenplay.

Deepa Mehta won the best director for Funny Boy after a long and arduous awards season.

The film was supposed to be Canada's entry for best foreign film at the Oscars, but it was later disqualified because it didn't meet the Academy's language criteria.

The film won best-adapted screenplay, which went to Mehta and Shyam Selvadurai, who wrote the script, as well as best music, which went to composer Howard Shore. Schitt's Creek, which broadcast its final season last year, managed to win big in the TV categories.

Catherine O'Hara won best lead actress in a comedy series for the sixth time in a row, one for each season of the show, following her six CSA wins on Wednesday.

The display Schitt's wasn't the only one to win. For his portrayal of long-suffering Kim's Convenience patriarch Appa, Paul Sun Hyung-Lee was awarded best lead actor in a comedy for the third time.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television presents the awards, which honor excellence in Canadian film, television, and digital media. Because of the pandemic, they were portrayed practically for the second year in a row on the academy's website and social media sites.
